general touch 4001s

hi, i came through an old device that i would like to connect to parallella.
4001s just have 4 connected pin for the serial interface (12v, gnd, tx, rx) that should be an rs-232 so i thought that maybe i can use the serial interface that comes natively in the parallella board (the gnd, tx and rx pins above the ethernet port) and provide external power to GT 4001s.
Otherwise i should use an usb to rs-232 adapter and install usb driver.

I don't know what a GT 4001 is, but if it uses proper RS-232 it must not be connected to the Parallella UART, unless there is a level converter between the two to convert to/from 3.3v logic and RS-232 levels. E.g. using a circuit based around a MAX232 or similar.
