FPGAs are expensive and high maintenance but ProASIC3 puts a giant dent in the cost by being a ASIC/FPGA hybrid. The IOs can do 700Mbit DDR which while not matching the epiphany, is still nice and speedy and comes in medium to large sized QFPs, so those with a steady hand can solder them. A bit of well sculpted verilog and you could sell some very flexible/configurable GPIO boards that would be directly accessible in the address space.
just a thought.
