I tried latest ubuntu-14.04 using these files, I experienced some issues.

1. no network
This is solved by "sudo rm /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules"
2. no HDMI sound, SMPlayer stuck
not yet solved
3. no usb audio driver
I found that the USB audio driver disabled by kernel config.
Why did you disable it?
4. nano editor is not installed
Nano is a default text editor of Debian/Ubuntu distribution.
5. There are many ~files in the system.
The criminal is Emacs
