ultimately the kernel build should follow PC practice, i.e enable as much as possible loadable module and CONFIG flags.
Also the FPGA image should also be loadable from linux OS.

Shodruk, what do you mean by "official" image? I'd heard vaguely from Andreas that some revised image is in the works, but no timetable since it was promised weeks ago. We've been trying to get NFS client working on the 12/23 12.04 release (which I consider a PoC), and the make has runs days and finally errored off, so we fully support the driver module request! Plus the performance fixes you showed them weeks ago. I guess if it drags on for a few more months, they can jump to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and call that "official" 8-( Dan

You can load the fpga image from linux.
However be aware that during the load, the fpga PL isn't running which mean you can't have any kind of AXI access to external logic or you will just crash the ARM ...

Given that the HDMI graphics are OK but poor (relatively, compared with Pi) and there still appears to be a heat issue with the FPGA HDMI logic, then an important slice of the initial Parallella community will be using another box to provide the graphics.
That is, a number of us chickens will be running around headless.
I'll take whatever advice I can get from Andreas to build from Github, or wherever, but perhaps there should be a new thread: "Requests for official Headless image".
